    Cool! I have a Waiex as well. Bryan gave a nice overview of the design. It indeed has a "Y" tail versus a "V" tail. Therefore, Dutch roll tendency is minimized thanks to the extra vertical area provided by the sub-rudder. I've noted that in turbulence that disturbs yaw, the Waiex may have a few more cycles before being fully damped than a straight tail but it's barely noticeable.

      Barely noticeable and well worth the extra 20% coolness the Y tail brings!

    Hey Ron, in my experience, the best way to fix vac pump issues is by removing the vac system. It's a time/money vampire of a aircraft system. With as modern of a panel as your 310 has, I'm really surprised the vac system was even kept in the airplane through the upgrade. (edit, I see now, you need it for boots)

    Thanks for the video! I too have been learning how to GoPro since the 4 came out. I've learned some things. That freeze frame was predicted with the wonky frames preceding the freeze. GoPros and long 4k video are not the intended spec for the gizmo, so it has always been a compromise. I'll assume you're using the fastest cards available, and the largest capacity. And, I'll assume the card was freshly formatted prior to the flight, empty of any other footage. Also, I'll guess that the camera was shooting in 4k @30 fps based off of the motion blur. Makes me think the sd card wasn't up to snuff, or was stuffed and couldn't keep up with the write speed requirements. Rarely , if ever, have I had a GoPro overheat hanging out in the breeze. GoPros are great cameras, the weak links are the SD cards for sure. BWTHDIK. Back to the Baron!

    • @ronrogers
      @ronrogers 6 годин тому

      I used the recommended cards to get the best results, 128GB fully formatted and empty. My goPro9 overheats easily, even in the airflow and from the forums, it is a very common problem. I even had a battery that go so hot it expanded and I had to wait a long time for it to cool before I could extract it.

    During the early 1970's I started taking flying lessons. I got my private pilot license, instrument, commercial and multi engine ratings all without ever doing a single spin. The FBO that ran the flight school did not want any of its airplanes to be spun, so they were not taught. While I was verbally instructed on spin recovery, I never entered a spin. I eventually progressed to taking the check ride for my CFI rating. Toward the end of the check ride, which I thought was going well, the FAA examiner said, "what would you do if I did this?" and put the Piper Cherokee into a spin. We made two quick turns before I woke up and remembered what to do and thankfully it worked. It kind of shook me up, but I managed to conceal it well enough that I passed the check ride. To this day I still remember the sight of the Hudson River spinning in the windshield...

    • @ronrogers
      @ronrogers 8 годин тому

      Interesting. I guess they don't require spin training to get your CFI anymore? I never soloed a student who had not done spins with me. But then I am old school.

    You know I always used to land right on the numbers like my instructor told me. And then I learned airliners always shoot for the thousand foot markers. Once I learned about the reasons for that, I changed my landing spot and I always land down the runway, maybe not thousand foot markers but I always give myself some space past the threshold. It's always interesting to me to see where airliner pilots land GA aircraft. Many just shoot for the numbers like everybody else and I often wonder about that because they're not doing that with the jet. Of course I didn't bother looking up the length of your runway so I don't know if you have the option to do that on your runway, but is that something that you do when you fly? Do you give yourself a little buffer past the threshold, just in case?

    • @ronrogers
      @ronrogers 10 годин тому

      In little airplanes I aim for the numbers. Runway length tends to be more critical in civilian operations (small civil airports). Whereas for the airliners, you usually have plenty of runway to spare and because of the slow response of a large aircraft, it is just safer to aim for the touchdown point. This is also the point that an ILS brings you to and to land on the numbers would require a "duck under" which can lead to an unstable approach if not executed early enough and is only something we do on very short runways in a large aircraft.

    Interesting that they use what looks like a phenolic resin coupler. Some of the liquid cooled TIG welding machines I work on use a little nylon key between a drive/fan motor and a coolant pump so that pump seizure doesn’t stall and/or burn up the motor -just snaps the key instead. Must be a similar principle here.

    I was instructing in America for a large FTO with contracts for ab initio training with several Middle Eastern airlines. It is not unusual for students to have difficulty with the holdoff and round-out,many instructors will be familiar. On one of several remedial lessons, at about fifty feet from the ground on the approach, Ahmed started his usual overcontrolling, and the possibility of a good touchdown was increasingly disappearing, he had reached his limit, and to my surprise, he let go of the controls and raised his hands with the words that ''Allah has control''. As far as he was concerned, whatever happened next was Allah's will, and he would accept it.

Part of our journey to fly to every Wisconsin airport as part of the passport program. The picture of Adam on final at Poplar Grove was his first solo in the airplane, just about a year ago. The airplane really belongs to both of us, he bought in with sweat equity. The inverted picture is in the middle of an aileron roll. The next pic is my dad and I flying out of the Rockwood, TN airport. The winter picture is New Years day at Janesville, this year. The picture in front of the F4/Huey/T33 was in Lincoln, IL on the way to Benton for the total eclipse. The sunset taxi pic was after a long day of XC. Adam does most of the flying when we go together but I did a couple of patterns on that day.

    Back in the mid-1970s I worked at a flight school in the north-east as a CFI. The Air Force had a special program where civil CFIs, like me, would train future pilots for the first 25 hours. It was a "pass or fail" program and the pressure on them was enormous. My flight school entered into a contract with the Air Force and several instructors were assigned "student pilots" (not learners). I believe the syllabus was designed to make the pilots fail. It demanded way too much in too short of a time. Before this, I never had a student puke in my airplane, although some naturally became airsick. However, all but two of my Air Force cadets puked during the first few lessons, even during straight and level flight. The pressure to succeed was immense. One day, one of my better students was annoyed because he wasn't learning to land properly. He couldn't understand the "flare" process just before the touchdown. So, I decided to sit in the C-152 with him on the ground for about 45 minutes going over and over the landing process in our heads, just like a computer flight simulator which nobody had at the time. After that, we went into the traffic pattern, and he nailed it. His landings were perfect. To this day, I have wondered if he ever made it as an Air Force pilot. The Viet War was over, and pilots were coming home to a very poor economy and the competition for jobs was immense. True story.
